Vera Wang – The Ultimate Wedding Dress Designer
What is it about a Vera Wang wedding dress? Her name carries a great deal of prestige; there is no doubt about that. And of course she does not only design wedding dresses. She makes designer dresses of all kinds. But in recent years, her name definitely has become almost synonymous with the phrase “wedding dress.” And that alone speaks volumes, not just about her elegant wedding dress style, but also about the power of marketing.
The public relations and marketing “team” behind Vera Want is to be commended as much as the famous designer herself, because they are the ones got her name in the papers again and again and again. As soon as celebrities decided they wanted – make that NEEDED – to wear a Vera Wang wedding dress down the aisle, that was it! She became a superstar celebrity in her own right. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that she herself if beautiful, elegant, charming and articulate, making her the ideal spokesperson for her own brand.
But she also has another quality, one that is perhaps even more important than the rest, and that is this: Vera Wang seems accessible. Does she exude elegance? Of course! But somehow, she manages to do so in a relaxed and down to earth manner. We understand at some level that she is insanely wealthy and successful and brilliant at what she does. But at another level, she is just so darn approachable. She seems warm and humble. And no matter how many brilliant PR people a designer may have on his or her “team,” if he or she seems to snotty and self absorbed, this does not bode well in the long run. Oh sure, some designers in the haute couture present themselves as elite snobs, thinking that if they act like rich jerks and saunter around with this air of exclusivity and arrogance, they will attract the kinds of (rich) clients they are seeking. But more often than not, this approach fails.
People (especially Americans) don’t have a whole lot of tolerance for elitist snobs, even in the world of designer dresses. Vera Wang is the living embodiment of the notion that If you are a warm, friendly, approachable designer and if you act like a human being instead of a pretentious idiot, you will garner a lot more loyal fans and customers, and those fans/customers will stick with you through thick and tin.
